Define Gold Butte.
It’s 345,000 acres in Clark County, Nevada, a region that lies in the northern Mojave Desert, with a terrain that includes flat desert, canyons, washes, massive rock formations, rugged mountains. The environment is arid and harsh.
Human habitation goes back thousands of years, as evidenced by the petroglyphs etched in the sandstone by at least four distinct groups of people. More recent human presence included the Spanish mining gold in the 1700s, and the mining of gold, copper and other minerals into the 20th century (and in one case, even into the 21st).
It is impossible to write a succinct description of a place so varied and ever-changing — a place you see one day can look entirely different in a different light on a different day. A rocky slope can be barren and bleak one day, and carpeted with bright and gentle poppies a few days later.
This is not an encyclopedic look at Gold Butte, merely a collection of my photographs, a collection that is always growing. I am not an expert on Gold Butte, just a committed fan.
